Mr & Mrs Pants - Colourful Litchi Orchard Day

Sometimes you get the gift of finding friends in your wedding couples. Sometimes its a match made in heaven ;) so we would like to thank Debbie from Etc Events for being the catalyst in this situation. Our journey with who we then called “Candice & Mark” started in about July 2011 when they booked us for their wedding, there were nuances of it being a “different wedding” - now sometimes you do not take that too seriously because almost everyone feels that their wedding is unique in their own way, which they are. BUT not like this.

So I give you Mr & Mrs Pants as we now affectionately call them.

A Family Affair - Claudia & Darren at Rainfarm

We met Claudia and her awesome Mom Les over a year ago now, Claudia loves Photography and was super keen for us to shoot the wedding. In the interim we were able to use Claudia as a model in a fashion shoot for Wylder Jane and Claudia photographs really well so we were sure of awesome photos at the wedding.

Vintage Retro Bush Wedding - Catherine & Troy

I chose to come home for my wedding: “Both Troy and I were born in SA and spent our childhoods family holidays experiencing the beauty of SA through wildlife. Although we live in London now SA will always be our home and you just cant shake that love for raw African nature and that’s why we both knew this was a memory that had to be create there.”

Squeaking Takkie - Your first dance

For many choosing a first dance song at their wedding can be difficult, some have really alternative choice in music and will have difficulty choosing a song that will not scare the guests or maybe the couple is not big into music and will choose something off the radio. I think for everyone it is different but as music lovers, Adrian and I were quite picky with our first dance song. We have also been pleasantly surprised of late, of the gravity away from the common pop songs and more towards meaningful and different songs. Here are some of my favourites: (some from weddings, some from my iTunes list)

  • Keane - “Somewhere only we know”
  • Death Cab for Cutie - “I will follow you into the dark”
  • Kings of Leon - “Revelry”
  • Stateless - “Bloodstream”
  • The Rolling Stones - “Stateless”
  • Incubus - “Monuments & melodies” - I also am a big fan of their song “Dig”(M&M was Adrian and my first dance song)
  • Pearl Jam - “Nothing as it seems” - as well as “Lay down your arms”
  • Foo Fighters - “Everlong”
  • Foo Fighters - “My hero” (Paramore does an awesome version - it was my dad-daughter song)
  • The Smiths - “There is a light that never goes out”
  • The Cure - “Love song” (Adele does a beautiful version as well)
  • Lana Del Rey - “Blue Jeans”
  • Ben Harper - “Waiting for you”
  • David Gray - “Sail away”
  • Blink 182 - “Miss you”
  • The Doors - “Love her madly” ~ a nice dancey first dance song
  • Louise Armstrong - “What a wonderful world”
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers - “She looks to me”
  • Blue October - “She’s my ride home”

The tradition dates back to royal balls where royalty or guests of honour opened the dance floor. At weddings, the couple are essentially the guests of honour and thus they open their dance floor. Ideally they should start their wedding party with a song they love. Do it =)

It Bears Repeating … “I’m booking a cheap Photographer!”

Recently browsing my mini feeds I receive awesome notifications from local and overseas blogs showcasing Photographers who have successfully captured DIY and budget weddings. But when it comes to some South African DIY/Budget Weddings there is a trend of using “the budding photographer”. Now before I get slammed for abusing the new-be photographer, I understand that everyone starts somewhere but also know a second thing. The top Photographers in our industry are fully booked and cannot want for more work so this is not about anyone “stealing work” or anything like that.

Back on January 1, 2012 Adrian and Jaimi embarked on a 366 day commitment. What we didn’t know is that one photo a day, IS NOT, as easy as it sounds. Cos sometimes you’re just not that into it. But after all it does push your creative button once a day and it has been super fun so far!!

Justifying the expense of “The Wedding Photographer”

Recently a local Photographer blogged the good, bad and ugly of wedding photography and outlined the job at hand of being the one who captures someone’s special day Photographically. So this gave me an idea for an article about how to justify what you are spending on your special snaps.

After the countless hours you have spent trying on dresses, choosing stationery, trying menu’s and sampling cakes and booking your venue you will be left with one of the most important items on a wedding to do list - your Photographer. This is both a tricky and time consuming task for some because there is the delicate balance of cost vs quality and what you can actually spend. So how can you justify what you spend on your Photographer for your wedding. Well let me walk you through a little bit of what goes into your special day.

My Snow Baby - Kwa Zulu Natal Snow 2011

My Jaimi and I travelled up to the Southern Drakensburg last month to go see the snow! My lady had never seen snow before so we dropped everything and cleared our schedules for an afternoon of fun! We packed a small overnight back just in case and stuffed our gumboots in the car along with cameras and the handycam.

Nifty 50 Fun & Games

I have been loving the depth and lighting I have found on one particular UK blog and so I decided to upgrade from my 80-200 2.8 lense to a 50mm 1.4 lense. Jaimi laughs at me because I have to get up and down to change my position instead of just using Zoom… I am not that lazy right!
