I hope this is not too unprofessional but I would just like to say how unbelievably excited both Adrian and I are to be involved in this first edition of Flat White. Our journey with Christine and Warren started back in 2009 when I used to write for her earlier coffee magazine all those years ago. Our love of coffee and our symbiotic creative relationship has led us to cross paths again and I could not be happier about it. So enjoy our column as often as we are able to be honored with your eyeballs reading the section!
Another love we share with this fabulous couple is a love for Cape Town. This love affair for Adrian and I began in December of last year. We saved up, booked and drove down to Cape Town from Durban for a little annual holiday. Adrian is a Photographer and I am both his wife and his kind of untitled creative sidekick if you will. We dive into adventures of travel and photo making as often as work allows us and this time it led us to fall in love with Cape Town.

Sometimes you get the gift of finding friends in your wedding couples. Sometimes its a match made in heaven ;) so we would like to thank Debbie from Etc Events for being the catalyst in this situation. Our journey with who we then called “Candice & Mark” started in about July 2011 when they booked us for their wedding, there were nuances of it being a “different wedding” - now sometimes you do not take that too seriously because almost everyone feels that their wedding is unique in their own way, which they are. BUT not like this.
So I give you Mr & Mrs Pants as we now affectionately call them.

I chose to come home for my wedding: “Both Troy and I were born in SA and spent our childhoods family holidays experiencing the beauty of SA through wildlife. Although we live in London now SA will always be our home and you just cant shake that love for raw African nature and that’s why we both knew this was a memory that had to be create there.”

You find the most amazing treasures in little Durban North roads, like for instance the Café-Scrapbooking shop with some serious carrot cake. This was the settling for Francie & Gareth’s e-sesh this winter. Their wedding will be in Autumn next year, again presented in a very english-vintage feel.
Thanks for this lovely setting at (Le Maison)[https://www.facebook.com/ReminisceScrapbooking] and we look forward to your wedding!

We met Claudia & Darren for the first time today at Darren’s beach flat, soon to be their home after their wedding in October. Its so beautiful how when people decide to have photos in a place where they feel most at home, their personalities shine. We loved shooting this surfer couple and we cannot wait to shoot the wedding in October.

Recently browsing my mini feeds I receive awesome notifications from local and overseas blogs showcasing Photographers who have successfully captured DIY and budget weddings. But when it comes to some South African DIY/Budget Weddings there is a trend of using “the budding photographer”. Now before I get slammed for abusing the new-be photographer, I understand that everyone starts somewhere but also know a second thing. The top Photographers in our industry are fully booked and cannot want for more work so this is not about anyone “stealing work” or anything like that.

Back on January 1, 2012 Adrian and Jaimi embarked on a 366 day commitment. What we didn’t know is that one photo a day, IS NOT, as easy as it sounds. Cos sometimes you’re just not that into it. But after all it does push your creative button once a day and it has been super fun so far!!

Since last year Jaimi and I have been toying with the idea of a huge family portrait of us and the guys (and the cats) for the house. A while back we saw some graphic work by Nic Lewis at a colleagues house. After a few failed attempts at getting a hold of the artist we eventually caught up with him at two weddings last year. At the most recent one Jaimi and I decided we needed to swop skills with the Lewis’.

So after shooting a fireman’s wedding this weekend and have a super cool fireman friend Dave Leppan of Pinetown Firehouse we decided that today’s Hipstamatic would be “the jaws of life”. We would like to thank the fireman on duty at Gillits Firestation today for allowing us into their firehouse to take these snaps. Thank you for being welcoming and even having a little chat with us! - You guys so need a double story though :).

You gotta wonder how many lives this piece of machinery has saved?

So thinking about the Hipstamatic and wondering what kind of story I could write about cricket without confusing the facts of the game, mis-quoating great moments and being under the factual scrutiny of three cricket-experts I decided to google search “top ten cricket blogs” - oh my word - there are a lot of intensley passionate cricket dudes and ladies out there.

Recently a local Photographer blogged the good, bad and ugly of wedding photography and outlined the job at hand of being the one who captures someone’s special day Photographically. So this gave me an idea for an article about how to justify what you are spending on your special snaps.
After the countless hours you have spent trying on dresses, choosing stationery, trying menu’s and sampling cakes and booking your venue you will be left with one of the most important items on a wedding to do list - your Photographer. This is both a tricky and time consuming task for some because there is the delicate balance of cost vs quality and what you can actually spend. So how can you justify what you spend on your Photographer for your wedding. Well let me walk you through a little bit of what goes into your special day.

My Jaimi and I travelled up to the Southern Drakensburg last month to go see the snow! My lady had never seen snow before so we dropped everything and cleared our schedules for an afternoon of fun! We packed a small overnight back just in case and stuffed our gumboots in the car along with cameras and the handycam.

Last week Jaimi and I did a portrait shoot nearby to where we live with the awesome Debbie Ivins. On that same shoot I could not help but Photograph the stunning landscape and how the sunbursts through the overcast weather was so picturesque - almost foreign.
I would now like to make these available as prints or image files at different prices. If you would like to contact me regarding this please email me.
The rest of this shoot is on Facebook.

On June 16 a mate of mine from back in the day Dale married his princess Tash at Calderwood Hall in Boston (Kzn Midlands). They had a beautiful small chapel service and an awesome blue sky Photoshoot. They partied late and the next morning at breakfast they were up with everyone greeting a new Sunday as a married couple.
Then last Friday we missioned up the North Coast toward Tongaat to play with paint balloons and water pistols. This was a bunch of full grown adults going crazy like 5 year olds. Tash mixed and filled all the balloons herself and bought her water guns from a local toy store.
After the wedding, Tash’s dress was filthy from dancing and letting of lanterns on the wet grass so then it actually became Tash’s Moms idea that instead of just doing a normal trash the dress shoot that she rather just go the whole nine yards. No one can lie and say dress designer was super chuffed with the idea but Tash decided that her heart was set on this and so we did.
We started the shoot up at the ruins in Tongaat which makes an awesome colourful backdrop to this kind of shoot. After firing water-paint balloons at one another Tash and Dale posed for some sunny backlit shots with their pistols and before long Tash and Dale were having their own little water war! Super epic!
We then all went down to the sea to rinse off and have the main war of the day. Girls vs Boys with water-pistols charged with water and ready for battle. It got to the point where everyone was re-loading with sea water. Tank GOODNESS for plastic toys ;)
Once we were done with the shoot and everyone was completely drenched, everybody headed to the local beach-pub Beach Bums and had one as the sun set. Pretty epic Friday for sure.
